The Calliope hummingbird inhabits high mountain areas and have been seen as high as 11,000 feet. It usually repairs its nest from previous year(s) or constructs a new nest over the old one. It builds nests near creeks, streams, and lakes. It is the smallest bird (3.25") in North America and is the smallest long-distance avian migrant in the world, migrating some 5600 miles to south-central Mexico each year.
