Looks nothing like the roadrunner you've seen on Warner Brothers, huh? Well this state bird of New Mexico resides all over Arizona and has some unusual facts about it. It likes to feast on a variety of food such as snakes, lizards, birds (yes birds), scorpions, eggs, rodents, bats and insects. (The more scorpions these things eat, the more I like them). It kills their larger prey by grasping it with their beak and brutally strikes the prey against rocks, logs, or the ground.. Basically, anything that's hard enough to kill its prey. Another weird fact about the roadrunner is that when they sunbathe, they raise their feathers which expose their black skin. Their black skin absorbs solar radiation.
They normally don't fly unless there's danger. They mainly stay on the ground, like the Warner Brothers cartoon, and can reach speeds over fifteen miles per hour, due to their powerful, strong legs. They are a member of the cuckoo family.
I took this at the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum during their raptor free flight. Roadrunners aren't raptors, nor do they fly very far, so I'm not exactly sure why they were part of the "Raptor Free Flight". I wasn't complaining though, as I like roadrunners.
