Killdeer are one of the most successful shorebirds due to their fondness of human modified habitats and their willingness to nest close to people. I've seen these birds live on plush football and soccer fields next to schools in Arizona. Whenever you get too close to them, they try to lead you (or any predator) away from their nest by displaying a broken wing act.
