Congrats to Mike De La Ossa for guessing the first "What is it" photo this month. This is indeed a wall mural and can be found on the side of the Tucson Museum of Art in downtown Tucson. After calling the Tucson Museum of Art and almost an hour of searching the internet (the latter was the winner believe it or not), I was finally able to find the name of this mural. The mural is called "Raices", which is spanish for "Roots". The mural was painted by David Tineo, who has done well over 200 murals around Tucson. While searching the internet, I found several stories on David Tineo and how he is now suffering from macular degeneration. He is legally blind and can only paint in his workshop in the early morning when the light is not too bright. By noon, everything is too bright for him to paint the rest of the day.
For those wanting to see just where my close up came from, I found a photo of the whole mural and cropped out a section to match up with my photo. You can see the photo here.
This photo was part of a "macro lens" photo project I assigned to myself for the month of December (31 photos in all). I wanted to do something to spur some creativity, and get me to try something completely different that would get me out of my comfort zone. My mom also decided to partake in this assignment on her web site.

I really like the colors on that one. It is very abstract too. Overall, a very good shot. If I had to pick one critic (just to nag you), it would be that the vertical "scratch" don't add anything to the composition, and are almost a little over exposed. But this is really just to be able to bash at a picture that has nothing wrong with it... I'm curious to see the other ones in this series!

I just take the photos. Can't help how they look in real life. So do you have a guess at what this is?
Ken Dobson on 1st December 2008 @ 10:29am
I know, like I said, this was just a critic to find one, really! :) I do have a guess: a sugar candy lollipop, the swirls being created by the different colors in the sugar. Am I close?

Can't give hints or answers. You'll have to wait at the end of the month to find out. ;-)

Ahhhhhh!!! This is so unfair! You said "until someone guesses what this is...". So either I did not guess right, or you changed the rules of the game! ;)
Anyways, nice shots, I love the colors and the swirls, whatever they are...

If someone guesses it, of course you won't have to wait until the end of the month.

Is it a picture painted on wood?
Jenn on 1st December 2008 @ 12:00pm
Is it a wall mural?
Mike De La Ossa on 2nd December 2008 @ 2:01pm
A wall mural would be correct. Nice job. Go for the bonus and tell me the title of the mural. ;-) Just kidding.
