Congrats to Michael D. for coming the closest to guessing this. It is actually a copper grate. The odd thing is that this was attached to a house and from what I could tell, served no purpose at all. Perhaps it's there for aesthetic purposes, but from what I could tell, it didn't look like it was hiding anything or used for any specific purpose. As for the purpose of this, I just wanted to see what isolating a specific area of this grid would look like in a photo. I didn't actually think it would come out looking like a cheese grater.
This photo was part of a "macro lens" photo project I assigned to myself for the month of December (31 photos in all). I wanted to do something to spur some creativity, and get me to try something completely different that would get me out of my comfort zone. My mom also decided to partake in this assignment on her web site.

Well it's a grid of some kind. Perhaps your house heating system? Very effective shot, I like it a lot.
