Believe it or not, I took this photo in my front yard. He happened to be going by me as I was out washing my truck. As I approached him, he changed directions and proceeded to go into my car port. Most of the low light shots I took of him weren't all that great. While in the car port, I went inside and cracked open an egg and carefully fed it to him.
After a couple of hours in my car port, I carefully handled him back out to my front yard and placed him in a more natural environment for a few photos. I was only able to get a few of him, before he crawled into a hole under some cacti.
The Gila Monster (pronounced HEE-la) is a species of venomous lizard native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. They are a slow moving lizard but there is no mistaking their hiss. When you hear it, it'll stop you dead in your tracks. The Gila Monster is the only venomous lizard native to the United States, and only one of only two known species of venomous lizard in North America, the other being its close relative the Mexican Beaded Lizard (H. horridum). The Gila Monster is often killed out of fear due to its reputation of being venomous.
