I live within ear shot of Canyon Del Oro High School and every football season I get to hear the games going on and the crowds screaming for their team(s). I've even attended a couple of games over the last 5 years. I've toyed with the idea of shooting some of CDO games for some time now and I finally decided to go and shoot them just for practice. I don't normally shoot action shots at night and I thought this would be a nice challenge. It certainly was. All of my shots that I'll be posting this week were done at 1600 ISO with a 75-200mm f2.8 lens and my 580EX II strobe.
A very special thanks goes out to head coach Pat Nugent for allowing me to shoot from the sidelines for the CDO Dorados vs Cienega Bobcats game.

Nice shot Ken. If you want one opinion on how to improve it, this would have benefited from a 400 mm lens. The action is somewhat lost with what's going on in the background, and if you had isolated the two "titans", it might have come across more strongly. But I like the colors, and sharpness is spot on, and you captured the moment!

Thanks Cedric. The whole problem is that I only brought a 200mm for the f/2.8 capabilities. Most of the time, I wasn't even at 200mm, because it was difficult to track the action and frame the subjects. A 400mm may have been overkill as well as pretty dark. It's definitely a crap shoot with what you get and it definitely helps to practice, which is why I wanted to do this. Over time, I think I could develop an eye for what to look for. For the learning experience of this night game and shooting action shots at high ISO, I rate the experience a 10. I love a challenge and would enjoy doing this again.
